Dave Bautista is not what you would call a “strong, quiet guy”. Hardly hidden beneath the giant body of a superhero — a role he has played several times in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films — lies a heart full of emotion. He is prone to outbursts of anger and frustration, and is not afraid to cry on screen. At 52, he’s a little older than your regular Hollywood action guy. He carries the weight in every line on his weathered face all these years. He looks like he can beat you up without breaking a sweat — and then grapple with the guilt and shame of what he’s done for the rest of his life.

All of these qualities make Dave Bautista the perfect lead actor for Zack Snyder, a filmmaker who has spent the last decade tearing apart the iconography of DC Comics’ heroes. He turned Superman into a reluctant savior, plagued by self-doubt, and turned Batman into a sadistic avenger of crime. Snyder’s latest version, Army of the Dead, is a high-profile combo of a zombie film and a robbery film. Beyond the thrill, however, it’s Snyder’s opportunity to continue the themes of his recent DC films, and especially his Justice League director’s editing of repentant fathers trying to mend broken relationships with their children amid apocalyptic gimmicks.

This is where Bautista comes in. He plays Scott Ward, a retired soldier who saved the Secretary of Defense from Las Vegas after he was suddenly overrun by zombies. The Vegas outbreak was ultimately contained by building a wall around Sin City. Years later, the military is ready to destroy the place once and for all so as not to cause further problems for the undead. After the government is distracted, a wealthy casino magnate (Hiroyuki Sanada of Mortal Kombat) recognizes an opportunity and recruits Ward to assemble a team to pull $ 200 million from the vault of his abandoned casino before the bombs wipe out the money.

Ward tosses burgers into a greasy spoon estranged from his adult daughter Kate (Ella Purnell) and decides not to lose anything. So he reunites with some of his old friends (including Omari Hardwick’s Vanderohe, a philosophical warrior who carries a giant circular saw as a weapon) and recruits new helpers (like Matthias Schweighöfers Dieter, a quirky safe cracker with no zombie-killing experience) to move to Vegas to return. Sanada’s Tanaka insists the heist will be a breeze — an early montage cuts off his description of the plot with slow-motion footage of Ward’s crew effortlessly slaughtering zombies on their way to happiness and fame — but no movie heist is ever a breeze. There are complications before Ward and his company sneak into Vegas. Kate demands to join the team to find a missing friend and Tanaka adds his right-wing man (Garrett Dillahunt) to the group and he obviously doesn’t have the mission’s best interests on his mind.

Snyder’s very first feature film as a director was a remake of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, a daunting task that he accomplished with impressive confidence and skill. Snyder returned to the world of zombies for the first time in over 15 years, inventing a vibrant new take on the genre. The addition of raid elements already gives the familiar formula a new tone and taste. Additionally, Snyder and co-writers Shay Hatten and Joby Harold are developing an interesting way to include both classes of zombies — the slow, jumbled, and the fast, intelligent — by creating an entire zombie society in the ruins of Las Vegas. The discovery of the customs and culture of this society (along with the motivations of the leader of the zombies, played by Richard Cetrone) intensifies the intrigue as Ward and his men penetrate deeper and deeper into enemy territory.

He also uses Bautista to great effect. Army of the Dead moves slowly, giving characters plenty of time to talk between the shootouts and car chases. Bautista is allowed to pour out his heart to Purnell and play some very funny scenes with Matthias Schweighöfers Dieter and Tig Notaros sarcastic helicopter pilot. Snyder understands that horror movie gore means nothing if we don’t take care of the characters to come alive, and he does a really solid job of adding emotional dimension to the human cast. At the end of the film, he even got us interested in Cetrone’s alpha zombie.

At 148 minutes, Army of Dead is dragging on a little too long. When it finally climaxes, its intentional pace fades for a hectic, chaotic finale that isn’t quite as satisfying as it could be. Overall, though, this is easily Snyder’s best film in at least a decade. When Ward repulses tears while trying to apologize to his daughter for all the troubles he’s caused, you can feel that Snyder is pouring out his guts in a much more metaphorical way than is typical in zombie films. It’s clear we don’t need a Snyder cut from Army of the Dead. This is a Zack Snyder movie through and through.

Additional thoughts:
- There are some bold pin drops in this movie, but the incredibly good choice for the song that plays over the epilogue is really crucial. It’s so literal that it’s brilliant. No one but Zack Snyder would have tried.

• Tig Notaro was cast as a last-minute replacement for comedian Chris D’Elia. After numerous allegations of sexual misconduct were brought against the actor last summer, Snyder removed D’Elia from the film completely and hired Notaro to replace him. Instead of filming entire scenes in the middle of a pandemic, Snyder Notaro filmed alone in front of green screens and then added them to the existing footage of the rest of the cast. The effect is persuasive enough that people who don’t know the backstory likely won’t notice — although if you know what happened, you can giggle once or twice when, if you know what happened You Notaro discover Art inserted in the foreground of group shots.

Also: the Snyder Bruise, the Snyder Bite, the Snyder Maim, the Snyder Stab, the Snyder Gouge, the Snyder Decapitation, the Snyder Hail of Bullets, the Snyder Nuclear Explosion and you have the idea. There’s even a report. Director Zack Snyder originally had a scene on Army of the Dead with a severed male organ, but he chose not to include it, and I wouldn’t mind if we never did the Snyder cut of THAT Snyder see cut.

The man who gave us “300” and “Sucker Punch” and “Justice League” is the director, co-writer, producer and cameraman for an original Netflix movie that is Zombie Apocalypse Vegas Heist Movies’ Nomadland . This is an apologetically exaggerated, blood-soaked orgy of stylized violence, filled with familiar action film characters going through familiar action film steps, loads of CGI, an abundance of epic set pieces, and a borderline grueling number of kills. You can click virtually any moment along the 148-minute timeline and either land on a scene of terrible bloodshed — or the characters pause to take a breath and discuss their next move, which inevitably leads to even more terrible bloodshed.

Did I mention this is not for kids?

Although Army of the Dead has a prologue regarding a military transport mission related to Area 51 that went horribly wrong and resulted in the release of an undead monster that quickly chews a dozen soldiers outside of the city of Las Vegas, it is not like we spend the rest of the movie tracking down a few zombies in military uniforms waging an unholy war. After one of the longest, blood-splattered, and entertaining opening sequences in recent film history, we dive into a standard-edition zombie film, albeit an extremely well-executed entry into the genre with some incredibly sharp humor and the obligatory moments of family reconciliation that are heartfelt in scattered about exploding heads and dripping guts.

Zack Snyder continues his glorious comeback with a mind-blowing, action-packed new take on the zombie genre. Army of the Dead is a heist film set in a Las Vegas overrun by meat eaters. Don’t think about Ocean’s Eleven meeting The Walking Dead. The film sets up a zombie scenario with a much more sophisticated enemy. Excellent practical effects and makeup design add to the gruesome carnage. A juicy subplot and long running time are negatives, but not enough to drag the film down. Army of the Dead is set to be a monster hit on Netflix.

Army of the Dead begins with a frenetic montage that introduces the main characters and frames the narrative. An accident results in zombies invading Las Vegas. The military surrounds the city with a barricade of containers to clean up the undead. A quarantine zone will be set up on the outskirts to house and monitor displaced persons. Strict measures are being taken to ensure the infection does not spread beyond the former city of Sin.
Dave Bautista plays Scott Ward, an ex-military man who fled Las Vegas with his Las Vengeance team. In the following years he is approached by a casino mogul (Hiroyuki Sanada) with a lucrative but dangerous and time-sensitive job. There is $ 200 million in his vault. He wants the money before the government destroys the city in four days on July 4th. Ward gathers his mercenaries (Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro) as well as a safecracker (Matthias Schweighöfer) and a trigger-happy social media influencer (Raúl Castillo). The mission becomes more complex when he is forced to enlist his estranged daughter (Ella Purnell) and a dodgy coyote (Nora Arnezeder) to infiltrate the city.

Zack Snyder had already earned his zombie merit badge in 2004 with the fantastic Dawn of the Dead. He completely changes the game by making the undead more than pointless organ nibbles. There are different types of zombies that don’t just whirl around and actually have an agenda. Reaching the vault is not just a walk through the vault. The team must carefully negotiate a path to its goal. But not everyone on the mission has the same goal. Snyder’s plot isn’t the stale zombie makeover we’ve seen countless times before. It’s refreshing to have a little creativity in the genre again.

Army of the Dead has an abundance of CGI, but the creature and makeup effects are standout. There are scenes where blood and guts splash on the camera lens. Arteries gush like fountains, skin is torn, and intestines are pulled like pasta. I’m not a fan of extreme blood, but the conspiracy warrants a bloodbath. This is not torture porn. The action has a human toll that makes sense. Death is not easy or painless in this film.

Zack Synder’s usual weaknesses are there. Army of the Dead runs for two hours and twenty-eight minutes. The length of the movie introduces some unnecessary pauses. Fortunately, the action picks up again, but closer editing would have improved the pace. There are melodrama tones as well, as Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell have a strained father-daughter relationship. It’s absolutely incredible and forced. Even so, Snyder’s fans are very much aware of his recent loss and understand why the issue of reconciliation is so important.

Army of the Dead is a hilarious crowd puller from a director who is clearly back in the groove. It’s the first movie in a new zombie universe with a prequel, Army of Thieves, slated for later this year. Army of the Dead is a production by The Stone Quarry. It will be released in theaters on May 14th. Followed by a streaming debut on Netflix on May 21st.
